The old POST OFFICE
by John King
I have a memory,
in the back of my mind,
it's about a building
that goes back in time.
It stood on the corner of
Essex and Broadway,
I wish it was standing there today.
I felt so safe and secure,
once I was inside!
To me it was a monument,
of government pride.
Remember the pillars made of cement?
They stood up for years
without even a dent.
And the big glass doors,
or the polished marble floors.
Remember the mailboxes
that covered the walls?
and the steady clicking,
of heels in the halls?
And the government officers
on the second floor.
With a title painted in gold on the doors .
ONE WAS FOR THE ARMY;
AND ONE FOR THE NAVY TOO,
AND A BIG ONE FOR THE INTERNAL REVENUE!
ALL THAT IS LEFT IS A FENCED IN LAWN;
WERE HAS THAT BEAUTIFUL
BUILDING GONE?
